International Law Seminars No. 8: U.S. Legal Retrieval in the Context of Academic Research and Writing

The 8th issue of the International Law Salon in 2020 was held at 9:30 on August 5th as scheduled. This salon focuses on how to retrieve American law in academic research and writing. The lecturer is Mr. Yi Bo, an associate professor from Southeast University. Prof. Yi Bo is a visiting scholar at Cornell University Law School,  Worcester Polytechnic University, and University of California, Los Angeles School of Law. He has been a visiting scholar in the East and West of the United States for many years and has conducted in-depth research on American law. This lecture was hosted by Ma Guang. More than 40 teachers and students from inside and outside the college participated in the salon through Dingding Live.

Prof. Yi believes that writing is a lifelong thinking and maintenance practice for legal professionals. American laws include federal law and state law, statutory law and case law, which are broad and profound. Prof. Yi first introduced Zhejiang University's professional database and comprehensive database related to American law and highly praised the richness and comprehensiveness of its database resources. He hoped that students could make good use of the resources for writing.

Later, Prof. Yi recommended writing software, learning websites and enlightenment books to audiances, and introduced English literature, the practice of the United States in international law and how to retrieve legislative materials.Prof. Yi pointed out that the United States has a huge legal system. In addition to federal laws, each state has its own laws, so it takes a long time to learn American law. At the end of this salon, the teachers and students raised their questions to Prof. Yi, and he answered a series of questions about the national sovereignty immunity and child protection laws in the United States.
