On the evening of 4 December 2020, a special legal skill man-machine challenge is held in the auditorium of Zhejiang University Law School. Divided into four groups, sixteen contestants were busy glancing at the contracts on the computer. However, at the center of the forum, the Machine Group’s contestant seat is empty.


In the evening of December 4, a legal contract review Law Artificial Intelligence Challenge was held in the auditorium of Zhejiang University Law School.


This Law Artificial Intelligence Challenge is jointly organized by Guanghua Law School of Zhejiang University, the language and Technology Laboratory of Alibaba Damo Academy and the College of Computer Science and Technology of Zhejiang University. It is the first legal contract review Law Artificial Intelligence Challenge in China. Academician Wu Zhaohui, President of Zhejiang University, Jia Yu, chief procurator of the People's Procuratorate of Zhejiang Province, and Zhang Jianfeng, President of Alibaba Damo Academy delivered speeches and presented awards to the winners.


According to the organizers, this event focused on "contract review man-machine competition". At the competition site, four human lawyers from well-known domestic law firms and 12 law students from Zhejiang University formed four groups. A machine group with only artificial intelligence is a separate team. In all, there are five groups: human group (team AB), machine group (team C) and man-machine group (team DE) in total.


The game began at 7:30 p.m. Compared with human lawyers, artificial intelligence "lawyers" are surprisingly efficient. It takes them only 2 minutes to looking at the contract. Completed the audit of all the contracts, the machine group with artificial intelligence announced "review is over" and chose to hand in the papers in advance.


After that, four teams of human group and man-machine group submitted their answers respectively. Through the careful selection of five judges, team D of the man-machine group got the first place with the highest score of 630, team E of the same group got the second place with 595 points, and team C of the machine group got the third place with 480 points.


It is worth noticing that the man-machine group got higher points than the machine group, and the machine group got higher points than the human group.

Prof. Wu Zhaohui said that in the face of the superposition and integration process of the fourth industrial revolution and the second machine revolution with the core driving force of intelligence, law will speed up the transformation of innovation paradigm with under the support of technologies such as artificial intelligence, mobile Internet, block chain and usher in a golden era of development in active response. Zhejiang University together with DAMO Research Institute of Alibaba, took the lead in holding the Law Artificial Intelligence Challenge in China, which will not only provide new enlightenment and thinking for man-machine cooperation in contract review and other legal practice, but also promote the construction of the rule of law in China by empowering with artificial intelligence. We hope that you can take this challenge as an opportunity to promote the development of law under the changes and reforms and make joint efforts to write a new chapter in the construction of human intelligence and machine intelligence in the realm of law.


Jia Yu, the chief procurator of the People's Procuratorate of Zhejiang Province, said that artificial intelligence is an important driving force to lead a new round of scientific and technological industry revolution. We hope that this challenge can work as an opportunity to promote the comprehensive integration of law and artificial intelligence and the cultivation of legal and artificial intelligence personnel, accelerate the application of intelligent products for legal services and shape a new pattern of legal undertakings.


Zhang Jianfeng said that the challenge chose the legal contract review as a starting point to explore a new mode of man-machine interaction, which aimed at constantly exploring cutting-edge technology to serve the community. We are looking forward to seeing more and more industries be combined deeply with artificial intelligence and more man-machine cooperation scenarios and applications land. We should work together to draw wings for innovation.


At the challenge, Zhu Xinli, deputy head of the Higher People's Court of Zhejiang Province, Xu Xiaobo, deputy director of the Department of Justice of Zhejiang Province, and the head of the Undergraduate College of Zhejiang University gave speeches. The delegates of the challenge judges made comments and experts of related fields answered questions from the audience on the spot. Experts at the meeting said that the law is constantly keeping pace with the times, and the excellent performance of man-machine cooperation also shows that the combination of artificial intelligence and legal services has a promising applications.
