From January 20 to February 1, 2024, Guanghua Law School of Zhejiang University conducted a 13-day study tour in France, Belgium, and the Netherlands. A total of 48 undergraduate and graduate students participated in the 2024 Field Studies Program, which aims to broaden students’ international perspectives, enhance comprehensive literacy, and learn advanced legal concepts and practical experience.
Learn International Legal Knowledge
During the visit to Paris, students attended courses on data privacy laws at Paris Panthéon Assas University. The courses given by Associate Professor Pierre Emmanuel Audit were lively, humorous, and easy to understand. Members of the delegation learned the current situation of personal information protection in Europe as well as the basic structure of the General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR), a legal norm widely applied in the EU and referenced by various countries. The combination of innovative thinking patterns and profound legal traditions provides students with a new perspective on understanding data privacy laws while laying the foundation for future study in this field.
Dialogue with alumni and diplomats
During the program, Qiao Zhengshun, First Secretary of the Education Department of the Chinese Embassy in France, Zhai Xiaohang, Secretary General of the French Alumni Association of Zhejiang University, Wu Yanchao, Vice President, and alumni Ding Ting, as well as Jin Qiongjie, Secretary General of the All French Legal and Economic Association, warmly expressed condolences to the delegation and conducted in-depth dialogues with teachers and students.
Visit international organizations and EU institutions
In addition, the delegation visited multiple international organizations and EU institutions, including UNESCO, OPCW, ICC, PCA, the European Commission, the European Parliament, and the European Council. During the visit, members of the delegation learned about the history, structure, and operating rules, as well as the functions of institutions, listened to court hearings, and engaged in in-depth and enthusiastic communications with staff.
Experience Western History and Culture
The program went through three European countries: France, Belgium, and the Netherlands. The delegation visited cultural institutions and historical sites, such as the National Library of France, the Louvre, the Notre Dame Cathedral, the Eiffel Tower, the European Museum of History, etc. During the visit, students deepened their understanding of Western culture and atmosphere and broadened their perspective of globalization.
Through this program, the members of the delegation have systematically learned international legal knowledge, visited various international organizations and EU institutions, and gained a deeper understanding of the culture and social landscape of European countries. During this process, students gained knowledge, enhanced friendships, and achieved growth. The program is expected to be a new starting point for law school students to explore legal knowledge. It will serve as an opportunity for students to combine legal knowledge with practical experience, continuously exploring the true essence and essence of law in the future.
