Several Issues on the History of International Law

On the afternoon of June 6, 2024, the Guanghua Law Schoolsuccessfully heldthe frontier Law Lecture and International Law Salon, titled Several Issues on the History of International Law.”

The salon was led by the famous legal scholar, Prof. He Qinhua from East China University of Political Science and Law, as the keynote speaker. Distinguished participants included Prof. Wang Guoguo, a senior professor in the humanities of Zhejiang University, Prof. Zhao Jun, Vice Dean of the Guanghua Law School, Prof. Luo Guoqiang, a Qiu Shi Distinguished Professor, Associate Prof. Ma Guang, Executive Director of the Institute of International Law, Associate Prof. Qiu Wenxian of the Guanghua Law School, and Yu Haiou, Director of the International Law Teaching and Research Office of Zhejiang Wanli University. The salon was chaired by Prof. Hu Ming, Dean of the Guanghua Law School, with numerous faculty and students from universities and research institutes across the country in attendance.

Prof. Hu Ming, the moderator, emphasized the significant importance of the lecture’s theme from the perspective of integrating domestic rule of law with foreign-related rule of law, and introduced the distinguished guests attending the lecture.

Prof. He pointed out that there are eight cutting-edge issues in the current research of the history of international law that require close attention, which also forms the core content of this lecture.


In the subsequent discussion segment, Prof. Wang Guoguo was the first to speak. He affirmed the importance of Professor He’s research and collation of historical materials on the development of international law over thousands of years, and shared his feelings about the patriotic sentiments of modern international jurists such as Li Haopei and Chen Tiqiang.

Prof. Luo followed the remarks of the two previous experts and shared several points of reflection.

Prof. Ma explored the connection between customary international law and the history of international law from the perspective of sources of international law.


In the following discussion and exchange session, the audiences actively commented on or raised questions about the content covered in the lecture. Prof. He provided insightful and targeted responses and answers one by one.

Finally, Prof. Wang summarized the lecture. He once again expressed his gratitude to Prof. He for his profound yet accessible, enlightening, and innovative explanation. He also pointed out that the lecture not only significantly broadened everyone's academic horizons but also further stimulated interest in the history of international law and international legal studies.
